A bid to open a hostel for rough sleepers in Great Yarmouth town centre has been given the green light.

The proposal will see a temporary change of use for six years of the first floor of the former telephone exchange building on Hall Quay.

This will allow that part of the building to be used as emergency accommodation for up to 16 adults as well as office space for support staff connected to the hostel.

The bid, which was submitted by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, was approved by its development control committee on Wednesday (January 18).

Described as a 'Somewhere Safe to Stay Hub,' the hostel will provide a minimum of nine bedrooms on a temporary short-stay basis to those who are rough sleeping or at risk of rough sleeping.

It is expected that individuals will stay at the hostel for up to two weeks to get warm, fed and assessed to try and establish a supported pathway into more secure housing.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council will lease the building and manage the premises through provision of staff from 6am to 11pm with an overnight concierge service.
