Plans to turn a landmark from a town's seafaring heyday into a café have been put on ice.

The decision was due this week over whether a developer could revamp Maritime House in Great Yarmouth, a landmark 19th century building in Marine Parade.

Kenzoku Properties, a Norfolk-based firm specialising in renovation work, hopes to turn it into a café with office space and flats on the upper floors.

But the fate of the 19th century building will be decided at a later date after the developer decided to reconsider the application.

Maritime House was built as the British and Foreign Sailors’ Home and Refuge for the Shipwrecked in 1860.

Thousands of sailors passed through the home over the next hundred years, with 1,400 staying there during the Second World War.

The Sailors' Home closed in 1965 as advances in maritime safety reduced the need for it. It was later used as a tourist information centre.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council put the Victorian property on the market for £250,000 in February this year after it became "surplus to requirements".
