A Norfolk wholesaler which keeps Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile supplied has tripled its capacity by moving into a former rival's old premises. 

Great Yarmouth-based wholesale food and drink supplier Thompsons Food Service has moved into a 30,000 sq ft warehouse in Nelsons Yard, South Denes Road, which is more than three times the size of its former unit in Southgates Road.

The warehouse was previously owned by Savoy Catering Supplies, which - along with its sister company Tanner Brodin Ltd - went into administration earlier this year and were bought by Thompsons in February. 

​Thompsons started out as a butchers in the 1950s, before growing into a food supplier with the formation of Thompsons Food Service in 2009.

Ryan Thompson, director at Thompsons Food Service, said: “I’ve been in the business since I was 17, and in that time we’ve gone from a family butchers to a food supplier to almost all of Great Yarmouth’s leisure and hospitality businesses.

“We’ve always been a business that has looked for ways to grow our operations, and with us reaching maximum capacity at our old place, this was the perfect time for us to move into a much bigger premises.

"The busy summer period has been easier to manage compared to previous years, with all of us in the business enjoying our new base.”

This summer, the business supplied 800,000 scoops of ice cream and 400,000 packaged ice creams and lollies.

Its new warehouse has also helped the firm to expand its cash and carry service, with extra space to stock and display more than 8,000 products.
