Officers at the scene refused to comment on the nature of the incident, but witnesses say a body was seen in the water and was later recovered and taken away.

A holidaymaker, who does not want to be named, described seeing the body afloat.

"Four or five people jumped in to save them," he explained.

"Two ladders were also put into the water by a local boat firm.

"It's a shocking thing to see when you're on holiday."

Another eyewitness explained they did not know what had happened but that it looked "like a serious situation".

Traffic was not stopped and the area was not cordoned off.

The incident happened close to Herbert Woods boatyard, near to the bridge over the river Thurne.

There have been a handful of other deaths on the waterways this summer.

One man died after jumping in to Wroxham Broad for a late night swim, while another man died after falling in the fast-flowing Bure at Great Yarmouth.
