A suspected unexploded bomb found on a Norfolk beach has been washed back to sea.

Last Friday police and bomb experts were called to Hemsby beach after the discovery of the suspected explosive device by a member of the public.

However, Norfolk Police have said that the disposal unit team summoned to the scene was unable to locate the suspected explosive device as it had been washed away with the tide.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "We were called to Hemsby beach at 10.20am on Friday, September 13 by a member of the public who found an item on the shoreline believed to be an unexploded ordnance device.

"The item was underwater again due to the tide coming in. The cordon was put in place for safety reasons until the Navy EoD attended.

"Following a search by the Navy EOD the item was no longer at the site so the expectation is this has moved elsewhere with the tide.

"They led on this element."

The police cordon tape, which remains in place on the beach, is due to be removed by police following the search.
