The Broads Authority has released a CCTV clip of a near-drowning as they urge boaters to wear life jackets.  

Recorded earlier in the year in Great Yarmouth, the footage shows a man attempting to board a boat that has already started to move away from the quay. 

The man was not a confident swimmer and not wearing a life jacket but thanks to the quick thinking of the other person on board he managed to grab their hand and hold on.

The boater was eventually pulled to safety and did not suffer any significant injuries.

The incident was one of three that have happened so far this year in the same location - which is home to deep tidal waters - that has resulted in someone entering the water without a life jacket.

Through a combination of fortune and the efforts of those around them, no one has suffered serious harm.

Now, in the run-up to the busiest part of the year, the authority is reminding experienced boat owners and novice hirers alike about the importance of water safety.

A spokesman for the Broads Authority said: "The vast majority of visits to the Broads end in safe, happy memories, but it only takes a momentary lapse in judgement for things to go wrong.

"Please remember to wear a life jacket at all times and continue to give the water the respect it deserves.

"You can help by wearing one yourself, ensuring others on board do too and sharing this video to get the message out."
