Land has been cleared in a coastal town to make way for the construction of a larger branch of a popular discount supermarket.

Earlier this year, Lidl announced plans to build a bigger store in Great Yarmouth, just yards away from its current branch on Pasteur Road.

Less than a five-minute walk away, the former Trafalgar College has been reduced to rubble to make way for the new supermarket branch, with construction expected soon.

A spokesman for Lidl confirmed the Pasteur Road store will remain open until the Thamesfield Way branch opens in 2025.

The new supermarket will be 42pc larger than at its current location.

During initial planning consultations for the new Lidl, Tesco argued it could lead to the harm of other retail centres in the town and pose a threat to future investment.

However, it was decided that it would not have a significant effect on the number of people visiting the shops in the town centre.
