A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life after several people were reported to have been doused in petrol.

Police received reports that a man in his 40s had forced his way into a home on Middle Market Road and doused those inside with petrol before running away at around 6am on Monday.

Minutes later, the man was assaulted on Regent Road and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

(Image: James Weeds)The man has since been released from hospital, arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life and taken to the Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning where he remains.

Following the reports of the assault on Regent Road, Karl Pammen, 40 and of no fixed abode, was charged with attempted GBH.

Pammen appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday and was released on bail to appear at Norwich Crown Court on June 25.

A person living on Middle Market Road, who did not wish to be named, said: "At about 5.45am I heard people walking down the road. I looked out of my window and saw two guys and maybe two ladies.

"They went into the flat across the road and about 15 minutes later I heard lots of shouting and screaming and saw people running around outside.

"Then the police arrived at about 6.05am."

Another neighbour said: "I heard a lot of shouting outside at about 4.30am.

"I thought it was just down to it being the bank holiday weekend. I heard the air ambulance at about 6am but that was closer to town. So it seems something bad has happened."

Norfolk Constabulary's Forensic Services were outside homes on Middle Market throughout the day on Monday.
