A 15-year-old who fought tooth and nail to compete in a martial arts tournament in America will be coming home as a world champion.

Gerard Knight, from Gorleston, won a gold medal in the one-on-one Kimute karate tournament at the World Martial Arts Games in Daytona, Florida on Sunday.

He also picked up two silver medals in kickboxing and a bronze in team Kimute at the tournament.

Gerard said: "Everyone fought hard.

"I am shattered, and I'm aching all over.

"But it was brilliant.

"Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible."

At the start of the year, Gerard earned the right to compete at the World Martial Arts Games. However, the cost of transatlantic flights and accommodation was too steep for his family to cover.

The plucky 15-year-old visited businesses in Yarmouth and Lowestoft and was able to raise more than £4,000 to make his dream a reality.

Gerard aspires to make it onto Team GB for the Olympics.

For the rest of his time in the States, Gerard and his family will be relaxing at the pool before attending the closing ceremony awards.
