Lidl has said the future of an east Norfolk store is at risk.
Its Caister branch opened in the seaside resort 21 years ago.
The food store giant has said it is not fit for the future and unable to meet the needs of its ever-growing customer base.
The continued trading of the Norwich Road store therefore cannot be guaranteed, putting its future in serious doubt.
A Lidl spokesman said the future of Lidl in Caister is at risk if the plans for a new store are not approved.
Regional head of property Andrew Hodgkinson said: “We’re incredibly proud to be part of the community.
"However, as we continue to support more and more customers looking to keep the cost of their groceries down, our Caister store is simply not fit for the future and our growing customer base."
To replace the Norwich Road Lidl, another store may be opening off the Caister bypass with two drive-throughs.
The team has been searching for years for a replacement site and found one by Yarmouth Stadium.
