Some people never get to see their dreams come true.
But when 15-year-old Gerard Knight from Gorleston competes in front of 9,000 people in Florida next week, he'll know he's one step closer to his ambition of achieving Olympic glory.
Taking up martial arts at the age of four to originally fend off bullies, Gerard's dedication to karate and kickboxing has given him the confidence to push himself further than he ever imagined.
And from July 29, Gerard will represent Team GB at the World Martial Arts Games in Daytona Beach, Florida.
"I am so excited," he said.
"I have wanted to do this all my life. I just can't believe I am going."
The road to the World Games has not been plain sailing for Gerard. Not only has he had to ramp up his training during his GCSE exam period, but he has also had to raise £4,000 to make it to Florida.
"I was a bit worried when I qualified because we don't have that sort of money," Gerard said.
"But my mum and nan printed off 400 letters for me, and I went about visiting factories to see if they could help."
In June, Gerard hit his £4,000 target. The donations have gone towards international flights for him, his mother and grandmother, martial arts equipment and insurance for his week-long stay.
"I just wanted it so much," Gerard said.
"I am so grateful for the help from everyone."
Gerard's trip to Florida comes with a bit of added pressure, as the World Games is known to attract Olympic scouts.
"I'm getting closer to my Olympic dream," he said.
"But I have to focus on one thing at a time.
"For now, I am focused on the World Games.
"And I am going to give it my all."
