An abandoned building could get a new lease of life under a £2.4m scheme to revitalise Great Yarmouth town centre.

Planners at Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) have recommended approving an application to repair and conserve the Grade II listed St George's Hall at 145 King Street.

According to the plans, the building's basement would be converted into two art studios with the rest of the property used as a gallery and community space.

The proposal also includes the demolition of an external rear toilet block and the erection of a rear extension.

The building is owned by Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust (GYPT) and its restoration will form part of the Great Yarmouth High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ).

The application will be discussed at a meeting of GYBC's development control committee on Wednesday (July 12).

The building is historically associated with St Georges Chapel and has been vacant for some time.

It appears to date from 1891 and was partially rebuilt in the 1950s.

After reaching a tipping point of rapid deterioration in 2019, the council served a repair notice which later led to a compulsory purchase order.
