The completion of major work taking place on a main bridge in Great Yarmouth has been put back.

The major maintenance works on Breydon Bridge are now scheduled to be completed by Friday, June 16.

It had been hoped the work would be completed early this year.

The delay follows a pause in works due to a full safety review after a contractor sustained a minor injury while working on the bridge last November.

National Highways say there are off-peak day closures from 9.30am to 3.30pm

until Friday, March 3, with any further possible closures being announced on its website later.

Diversions are currently in place for eastbound traffic from the A47 at Trowse Newton to travel southbound on the A146.

Traffic will then join the A143 at Gillingham and re-join A47 at Beccles Road, A47 interchange.

Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion in reverse.

While maintenance is carried out, boats will not be able to pass through the central section of the bridge, which will be unable to open to vessels taller than 13ft.

The maintenance works involve the replacement of the existing hydraulic lifting system from the central span using an underslung scaffolding.

National Highways said: "We understand the delayed completion will cause disruption to road users, and we are working with Norfolk County Council to ensure this is kept to an absolute minimum."
