More homes are being evacuated and a cordon has been extended after the discovery of an unexploded device in Great Yarmouth.

The suspected bomb was discovered by workers at the construction site of the third river crossing in Southtown Road at 11.36am today (February 7).

More than 100 homes are being evacuated with police knocking on doors to advise them to leave.

A number of road closures are in place and people have been told to keep away from the area.

The device was found during dredging work in the River Yare at Bollard Quay, close to the junction with Boundary Road.

An initial 100m cordon has been extended to 400m as a precaution.

People in homes and businesses inside the cordon are being advised to leave their properties.

The following road closures are currently in place: 

  • Southtown Road – closed from its junction with Tollgate Road all the way to Beccles Road.
  • Litchfield Road, off Southtown Road, is partially closed
  • Williams Adam Way, off Southtown Road, is closed
  • Boundary Road, off Southtown Road, is partially closed
  • Tollgate Road, off Southtown Road, is closed

Pedestrians and drivers have been urged to avoid the area.

The Explosion Ordnance Device team from Colchester is at the scene conducting investigations.
