Great Yarmouth is preparing to kickstart the Christmas season with a three-day festival including lights, fireworks and a large marquee.

The town's festive market opens at midday on Friday (December 2) at Brewery Plain carpark and will be open from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Graham Plant will push the button on the traditional light switch-on at 7pm on Friday.

This will be followed by a firework display, provided by Great Yarmouth Town Centre Partnership.

The light switch-on will also include the triangles of light, which residents and visitors are invited to take selfies with and share on social media.

One can be found in front of Great Yarmouth Minster and the other two will be either side of the market.

Visitors can browse wooden chalets and a large marquee bursting with stalls of food, drinks, arts, crafts and gifts, while children can enjoy an interactive nativity scene, as well as write and post letters in Santa's post box with their wish lists for Christmas.

There will also be a variety of fairground rides - including Tea Cups, a Fun House, trampolines and a carousel - placed just north of the Market Place car park.

Local community radio station, Harbour Radio, will be entertaining guests from 12.30pm until 3.30pm on Saturday, December 3.

There is also a festive Elf trail, where children are invited to find the letters hidden in the Christmas market, the Christmas Fayre in The Minster, Great Yarmouth Market and Market Gates, then unscramble them to find the missing words.

The top prize is a family ticket to see the Peter Pan pantomime at St George’s Theatre, with other prizes supplied by Claire’s Accessories and I Just Wanna Candy.

Free parking is available over the festive period on Saturdays and Sundays, which started on Sunday, November 27, and runs until Sunday, January 1.

The participating six town centre car parks are King Street, Market Place, George Street, Brewery Plain, Stonecutters and Fullers Hill.

Parking remains free in most town centre car parks every weekday from 4pm and noon on Wednesdays at King Street, Brewery Plain and George Street.
