Pupils and staff at a Gorleston primary school are celebrating after Ofsted praised improvements made in the classroom.

St Mary and St Peter Catholic Primary School has been rated as "good" by Ofsted.

The school on East Anglian Way had previously been rated as "requires improvement" by the education watchdog following an inspection in January 2019.

Ofsted carried out its latest inspection during two days in October.

Its report said pupils enjoy coming to school and they show kindness and have polite manners.

The inspection report said: "During lessons, pupils listen carefully to each other, working collaboratively to share ideas and find answers. This helps many pupils achieve staff’s high expectations."

It added: "Pupils also enjoy supporting the local community by, for example, visiting the local care home or collecting for the food bank.

"There are wider opportunities too for pupils to learn how to be charitable through arranging fundraising events for important causes."

The report praised the school's curriculum adding: "Leaders have developed an ambitious curriculum which means that teachers understand what pupils need to learn."

Ofsted also praised the school for prioritising reading, supporting pupils' personal development and having a strong vision on its staff training and support for them.

Abi Goddard, head of school said: "I am absolutely delighted at the outcome of this inspection.

"It demonstrates the unwavering commitment that everyone in our school has given, despite the challenges of the last couple of years, not only to raise standards but also to ensure that pupils and parents alike can be proud of our school.”

Ofsted said the school could make some further improvements.

Its report said in a few subjects leaders have yet to set out the concepts and vocabulary children learn in the early years to prepare them well for Year 1.

It also added that in some subjects teachers do not provide opportunities for pupils to link current learning to what was learned before.

Mrs Goddard said: "Looking forward we will build on the recommendations in this report to ensure that pupils continue to build on what they know and go from strength to strength."

The school has 226 pupils between the ages of three and 11, which includes nursery provision. It is part of the St John the Baptist Catholic Multi-Academy Trust.
