A publican hopes to restore the historic features of a landmark pub near Great Yarmouth seafront.

The Prince Regent is currently undergoing a facelift to its outside, and workers have discovered much of the pub's earlier facade remains in good condition.

For decades, the original exterior of the Regent Road pub had been covered with painted wood, hiding the cream and green bricks and tiles.

Landlady Alison Smith hopes the brewery can restore the features.

"It's become quite a focal point," said Mrs Smith, 40.

"I can't figure out why the tiles were covered up in the first place.

"It's got everyone talking. A lot of our regulars think it looks fantastic."

The exterior is the responsibility of the Stonegate Group - Britain's largest pub company - and while workers decorated the outside, they removed the wood panels revealing how the Prince Regent looked over half a century ago.

Signs reading 'Lacons Ales,' 'Bar' and 'Buffet' are currently viewable for the first time since the installation of the wooden coverings.

"Hopefully, the brewery will be able to restore it," Mrs Smith said.

"We want to see it brought back to its former glory. At the minute, it's a bit mismatched with different colour tiles. And some of them are not in great condition.

"But I expect it will require expertise and quite a bit of money, so we'll have to wait and see."

Mrs Smith said she expects to hear from Stonegate about the possibility of restorations to the pub's exterior by the end of next week.

As part of the renovations, the Prince Regent has also had two new wood-framed windows installed. A worker had found a threepenny bit lodged under one of the wooden frames.

"I'm not sure if that was for good luck or if one of the installers had lost his lunch money," Mrs Smith said.

The Prince Regent dates back to the mid-1800s, along with the shops - including Western World Klobber and the Grill & Grind - besides it and St Mary's Catholic Church opposite.

Over the years, the pub has been a Lacons, a Whitbread, and now it belongs to the Stonegate Group.

The Prince Regent has live music on Fridays and Saturdays during winter, and the pub will be showing games from the FIFA World Cup.
