After weeks of waiting, Scratby’s resident baby reindeer has been named.
Dozens of people suggested monikers for the six-month-old, who is living outside Scratby village store and garden centre with her mum Ruby and friend Premie for the festive period. And, after picking a name at random on Christmas Eve, the youngster has been called... Mercury.
She shares her name with the Roman god of messages - known for his quick flight thanks to his winged hat and shoes, as well as the planet closes to the sun, and this newspaper!
The name was suggested by Brett Alexander and his sons Thomas and Harry, from Caister. Thomas and Harry collected their prize of a giant soft reindeer toy on December 24. while money raised through the competition and Santa’s grotto will now be donated to Cancer Research and the Norfolk charity for bereaved children, Nelson’s Journey.
Mercury, Ruby and Premie will be in Scratby for a few more weeks before heading back to the North Pole. It’s free to visit them and they love to eat chopped up carrots, which can be purchased from the village shop.
