A vintage vehicle run and show which raises vital charity funds is moving up a gear by inviting lorries, buses and caravans to join its cavalcade of classic cars and bikes.
A record 100 entries joined last summer’s event organised by Centre 81, raising funds to help run its activities and skills sessions for members with a range of disabilities caused by illness or trauma, and its community transport service.
Owners of classic vehicles are being invited to take part in this year’s event on Sunday, running from Cromer to Centre 81’s home town of Great Yarmouth.
And, because the show has more room at its Golden Mile destination, organisers are looking to expand with any vintage, classic or unusual lorries, buses or caravans.
The event has raised around £10,000 for Centre 81 funds over the past six years, and this year its prize draw features a VIP top prize of two Brooklands Race Day hospitality tickets for the British Superbikes event at Silverstone on September 9, worth more than £400.
The run begins at Cromer’s Runton Road car park and takes a 60-mile route to Great Yarmouth, where the show is one of the key attractions during the weekend’s Wheels Festival.
There is a halfway stop at Queen Elizabeth Hall in North Walsham where hot breakfast rolls and refreshments will be ready for everyone to enjoy. Owners can pre-register or just turn up at the start, halfway point, or at the show and register on the day.
Centre 81 chief executive Diana Staines said: “The seafront will be closed to traffic for the first time, so we can park vehicles on the road as well as the Marina Garden – and we are hoping to make it another year to remember with a record number of vehicles.”
Prizes awarded at the end of the run include: best in show; oldies but goodies (pre-1959); swinging sixties (1960-69); future classics (1970 onwards). There are also fun trophies including the I’m Exhausted Award (vehicle travelling furthest to get to the start) and Wonderful Wheels – The People’s Choice.
Draw tickets are available from the Centre on Tar Works Road. They will also be on sale at the Centre 81 Bus in front of the Marina Centre on Saturday and at Marine Gardens, adjacent to the Sea Life Centre on Sunday.
